President’s Article                                                                                                                  October 2009

The aspen leaves are gone, the year is winding down, and in a few weeks, NAAR will have a new Board of Directors, led by President Deidre Craig. I hope you will reserve a spot at the Installation Dinner, sure to be a gala affair, and enjoy watching the new officers take their oath. I continue to be grateful that in this difficult market, so many of your fellow members are willing to give of their time, talents and energy to lead us through the coming year. Most of these same people attended AAR’s Leadership Day in Phoenix a few weeks ago, and we picked up a lot of good info. Our favorite speaker was Michael Tchong (www.ubercool.com) a ‘futurist’ who regaled the room with his take on where we are, and where we are going as an industry. Following, read some of his pithy thoughts on current trends:

Although the world "evolves" as technology advances, we don't take "time" to breathe anymore.

Examples:

* Our kids' only experience of "camping" is outside of Circuit City waiting for the new video game to be released

* We are now in a "gift card" economy...there is no time to shop with "thought" for others

* We have to "pay" someone to help us relax...like yoga classes.

* There are 24/7 news channels...they even scroll news across the bottom

* We look forward to cancelled or re-scheduled lunch dates

* We pump ourselves up with Starbucks and Energy drinks...while having to take sleeping pills to go to sleep

The trends are coming and going so fast we can hardly keep up.

Examples:

* "Middle Essence" 60's is the new 40's with plastic surgery, etc.

* "Wiihab" therapy = using the Wii constantly (who needs “rehab” therapy?)

* "Tappening" - urging consumers to drink tap water, bottled water is no longer cool

We are such control freaks that more people are single than married according to statistics...because they want to have "more control"

Other examples of the "control freaks" that we are:

* Fed-ex now has an online tracking system so we can see if someone lied about when they sent the package!

* Even Domino's Pizza has an online "Pizza Tracker" to tell you when it's in the box and on the way!

* They are now making barbeques with digital computer controls

* We live in a "You Tube" world

* Cars are now being made with "Digital Chauffeurs" to tell you the best restaurants in your area, nearest gas station, gas prices, etc.

As all of this relates to real estate: "Catch the Next Wave Before It Catches You”.

But we were also reminded that it is necessary to "breathe" once in awhile.

Recognizing the impact REALTORS® have on our community, United Way of Northern Arizona has approached our Board of Directors asking us to participate together as an Association in their Annual Campaign which kicks off this week.

Families and businesses throughout our community are certainly experiencing tough times this year. The amount of your contribution to this campaign is not important but your participation is. We often forget the power in our numbers. This is a concrete way for us to come together as an Association to show our community how much we care.

Kerry Blume, the President of United Way of Northern Arizona was excited to hear NAAR is going to participate in the 2008 Campaign and said “REALTORS® are wonderful networkers who have a great opportunity to help families and individuals in our community.”

Why United Way of Northern Arizona?

UWNA focuses on results.  Partnering with individuals, business, government and other nonprofit organizations, United Way addresses the most critical human issues and works to bring about lasting changes where you work and live.

UWNA maximizes your investment.  They bring the community together to improve lives by combining your contribution with others and strategically investing in results-driven programs.

UWNA is different.  Much more than an efficient fundraising organization, United Way is different from any other nonprofit in our community.  They serve as a convener, collaborator, educator and leader in brining about positive changes through contributions to 43 health and human service non-profits, they administer several initiatives, and the City and County governments entrust them with the administration of their health and human service funds ALL of which directly and positively impact our entire community.

Participate by making a donation. Please use the “attached” pledge form [see page 2 for link] to make your gift today; remember amount of your donation is not as important as your participation. All payments are tax deductible, as allowed by law, and will be personally acknowledged and receipted by the United Way of Northern Arizona.  Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Your contribution is the most effective way to advance the common good. When we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition of all.

For more information please go to www.nazunitedway.org

The Board of Directors endorse this campaign. Please feel free to contact any of them if you have questions.

Change in Legal Presence Reporting

In August the Arizona Department of Real Estate distributed information advising that new legislation (A.R.S. § 41-1080) requires all agencies who issue professional licenses to obtain proof of legal presence in the US from their licensees before issuing or renewing a professional license.  The Department has revised the method of providing documents and has discontinued the email address previously used for this purpose.    Please refer to the Department's website for information on what documents are acceptable proof and how to provide them.

Remember, this requirement must be satisfied before licensees can renew their licenses.

A press release issued on Wed., Nov. 12, by ForSaleByOwner.com contained inaccuracies and misleading statements about its ability to place unlisted for-sale-by-owner information on REALTOR.com, the official Web site of the National Association of REALTORS® operated by Move Inc. NAR and REALTOR.com are setting the record straight with the following clarifications:

1) The settlement agreement between NAR and the U.S. Department of Justice made no provision to allow unlisted properties, such as "for-sale-by-owner," to be posted on REALTOR.com.

2) ForSaleByOwner.com does not in any way enable home sellers to advertise their home on REALTOR.com without broker representation; every property on REALTOR.com must be listed by a licensed real estate broker.

3) REALTOR.com has not authorized ForSaleByOwner.com to resell REALTOR.com's Showcase Listings Enhancement package.

4) There is no relationship between ForSaleByOwner.com and REALTOR.com.

5) There are no unrepresented homes on REALTOR.com. Every property on REALTOR.com must be listed by a licensed real estate broker, and unrepresented properties would not qualify to be submitted to a REALTOR®-owned and operated MLS.

REALTOR.com® has asked ForSaleByOwner.com to issue a retraction. ForSaleByOwner.com did not discuss in advance the statements in its press release with REALTOR.com® nor did it request or receive permission to use the REALTOR.com® name in its press release. For more information contact Lucien Salvant 202/383-1176.

Effective January 1, 2009
